AtD is a late Pynchon romance novel. Late Shakespeare wrote
Romances.
The first essay in the new book on AtD tackles P's use of genres,
genre-bending and (usually) lovingly parodying. Genres have
tacit rules so, scholars/genre readers feel it when they are broken.
It is interesting in the history of understanding Shakespeare how
all the classicists found fault with his 'misuse' of the tacit forms
of plays, particularly the romances. He, too, bent the genres and
it took the best readers and/or centuries to point out the deeper
unities----of ideas, themes, etc.
