Against the Day

Chick Counterfly is the only human aboard The Inconvenience. Maybe 'inclined to 
sloth'. Another internal allusion: Slothrop? Real not fictional, therefore what? Us?
 
His thematic earthiness is accented at the end of the first chapter---"persistently"
bringing the ascending baloon down to earth---'another planet"......p.9
 
And a bit later, another section ending, when he is asked if discussion of the force in the heavens which
the Chums had experienced before he was aboard made him nervous....
"thinkin' about that apple fritter there"......p. 20
 
I think possible meanings to his name reveal themselves here......whatever the heavens and the flying
of the Chums means, Chick at least starts opposite it.
