Anything by Tuchman is pretty good -  I've read: 

The Guns of August 
The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World Before the War, 1890–1914 
A Distant Mirror:The Calamitous 14th Century,

Would like to read Stilwell and the American Experience in China
