Inherent Vice is the last book I'd recommend to someone as an introduction to Pynchon. It's more likely to be compared to other noir and neo-noir writers outside of Pynchon, (as well as Tom Wolfe, Hunter Thompson and The Great Lebowski) and found wanting. People who do like it aren't going to necessarily like Gravity's Rainbow. The best way in is either COL49, V, M&D, or to just tackle GR head on.
