Yes Beckett was one of Joyce's 'anticollaborators' but he claims never to
have been Joyce's secretary. Beckett was certainly 'haunted' by Joyce and
one can refer to Beckett's 'interview' with Israel Shenker in this regard.
Beckett claims to have consciously gone the 'other way'- towards ignorance
and impotence. 'Worstward Ho' I suppose! Anyway there is a lot of Joyce in
Beckett, right till the end. Read 'What is the Word' and you'll find bits
of the *Wake* here and there.
