Back to AtD 'small victories' p.888

Reef, after mental avoidance. dreams of his dad. His dad speaks of 'small victories',
which Reef, as happens in dreams, thinks is just what he needed ["the precise intelligence"] to get him 
back on the trail.....
then he awakes and tried to remember why it was important. p.888 top

"Small victories" some kind of message from Reef's subconscious that his dad's explosive
victories were wrong? and that little achievements in life--such as raising a son?--are what
matter? (and we learn on the next page how he can't cook worth eating. No daily small victories there)

Or is Reef still hearing his dad indicate every little bomb blast is a victory....but he has lost getting
why that is important?
