The previous section described movement and contingency; here there is
stasis, 'look[ing] across the lake'. Here, the space they occupy can be
labelled: 'Cyprian had told them to stay out of Albania.'
There is hearsay (that '[e]verybody' and 'some kind of revolution going on
up north') in contract to the personal interactions above the section break.
The 'one paved road' (968) will provide the kind of destiny they hope to
avoid. Fighting is a throwback, 'informal, by way of long-range rifles'.
