At it's core all religion is paranoia, from its beginnings it's an
attempt to ban bad things that might happen to you you can't explain
by praying to a supernatural entity.

If there's such an entity "out there" that started the whole thing it
could be that this entity is, for some reason, trying to get you. If
there's no such entity out there and the whole thing started without
an intelligent maker behind it most of what happens to you will be
most likely accidentally.

But if there's a "good entity" there might be also bad ones. Doesn't
the believe in god mean that you have to believe in the devil too?

Slothrop, who has Puritan ancestors, "has become obsessed with the

getting him" (...) Call it 'operational paranoia' or something. But--"
