Maybe it would be the ice crystals that are perilously deep, meaning 
dangerously thick on the wings????

Is Basher St. Blaise's Angel interceding here, causing the ice crystals 
to detach themselves and zoom off into space (the white abyss)?

Just a few thoughts.
