GR translation: opening as they were moved into new white abyss

That's how I read it.  The Angel apparently moved the thick and
dangerous ice off the wings. I can't be sure if the ice crystals open
or if the wings, perhaps impeded by the thick ice, open. My knowledge
of ice crystals and how they form is better than my knowledge of
military aircraft...so...maybe I read it as ice crystals open because
I don't now what kind of wings they have on their craft. Are they
wings that open?
