For those who don't-quite-recall-exactly-the-next-bit:

[Dixon has sailed back to Cape Town with a clock, leaving Mason in James's
Town with Maskelyne]

[Nevil Maskelyne? Such a packed literary name my theory is Pynchon came
across the name once and decided to write a novel around it.]

1. Mason and Mask have a chat.  Waddington, prior Mason, has left.  "I
don't do parallaxes of Sirius, I don't do Tides...I don't do Saellites of
Ju..."

2. Mason thinks Maskelyne a "*dangerously insane person".*

3. Clive and the East India Company, much made of Mask being his
brother-in-law.

4. Mask misses his Plumb-Line ob, which pleases Mason.

5. Mask likes volcanoes it seems, they drink.  Mask mentions alien genesis,
equations of god, dragons in volcano p134. [Kurtz]

6. They sing.

7. Mask reads M's Natal chart; finds something interesting with Dixon.
7a. Mention M assistant to Bradley, father of Susanah.
8. Mason begins Mask's chart, Mask overreacts.

9. C.Vroom shoots at Dixon, who turns and captures him and takes him to a
local where they spend the day.
9a. Drug/dance/orgies involving Austral in that 'Garden of Amusement'.

10. Dixon with clock and a Vroom girl.

11. Mas and Mask go to other side of island, meet Dieter, German soldier,
Mask says can't help him escape.
