a euphemism for P's poorest prose: warm excrement flowing from a pathetic puppet's mouth

Vibe's extended metaphor here is a game of musical chairs.

"Their foolish music is about to stop, and it is they who will be
caught out, awkwardly, most of them tone-deaf and never to be fully
aware, few if any with the sense to leave the game early and seek
refuge before it is too late. Perhaps there will not, even by then,
be refuge."

well, all the games of musical chairs i ever played, nobody left and
sat down early - although i guess one could have...
but the way his talk of the game turns sinister, twists the metaphor
metaphysically, it's pretty cool i guess - right? as far as depicting
the ravings of a mad plute in front of a crowd of his homies he's
egging on!

Vibe's doppelganger, shortly after the speets watching, Pynchon gets
us ready for a meaningful move of some kind on Walker's part. There
was a bit of a false alarm earlier on - Kit's fecklessness caused him
to veer away from what looks to me like Walker's real tender offer of
friendship in Goettingen, so that didn't pan out. But now, physically
back in Vibe's camp, Foley Walker must be about fed up...

so, just to remember - webb gets killed early on, and a long dragged
out death it is and very miserable. if he represents labor's worst
impulses, the hatred, the violence, the neglect of his family - and i
think he does - he still gets a bit of redemption in his kids' dreams
of him

vibe represents the strange attractor behind the most vicious aspects
of capitalism. in speaking to a group of those who are partially
successful in aspiring to be his peers -

you don't get any kind of a mental picture of this?

like, i dunno, ollie north on the lecture circuit, rush limbaugh live,
gingrich speaking for 100k someplace -- or, the what was it Frick and
the Mellons and them belonged to, the Pittsburgh hunting and causing
flood club, some after dinner speaker there --- or fricken Bush laying
it out at a Skull and Bones meeting, or Cheney with his Enron guys in
that meeting the Supreme Court agreed to let them keep secret...

Lucifer convening his fallen angels !
