P.988 starts it: " anxious men in dark suits ( around Gunther) in need of a repairman."....
Who are these men?
Does P. focus on the subordinate relationship of work(ers) here in a " Machine-age nightmare" (990) that Gunther calls the future of coffee...........and which builds to Frank becoming a typical
Non-working "boss" over the (exploited?) work of the indigenous crew?
Coffee is recurring in Pynchon.......that post-enlightenment drink that gets one going.....the cultivation of which is done by a nightmare machine.........
Another indictment on the speed---via coffee jolts--of the machine age and its speeded-up
Effects against our natural days and nights?
As well as a little parable of colonialism's exploitation?
