Remember the Balkan ghosts section of AtD? Did I post that there was a good book
with that title published while TRP was working on AtD? About the depth of resentments
and feuds. 

Now Ewball, reflecting on why so many would come west to work these coalfields ends up
thinking many were "already dead", "casualties of the fighting in the Balkans."

Why this? What's it mean, besides that they had to leave and come to a new country because
of the constant fighting?
