GR translation: a ground that by now has gathered

also, consider the phrase "gathered in"  (as opposed to the system
gathering, in his eyes -- rather, the "system of burst capillaries"
etc has gathered his eyes into itself, made them part of itself,
changed them from (what he momentarily remembers as) the "simple
direct eyes"

everybody else probably caught that right away...

(I think of the song in the movie "How to Succeed in Business Without
Really Trying" where the guy is standing in the executive washroom
looking in the mirror and singing to himself, "you've got the clear,
clean eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth")

anyway, but then he abandons the idea that his eyes were ever that
clear, that he was ever that innocent -- after all, They saw his
potential for evil!  (victim taught to blame himself)
