To me the problem with BNW and 1984 is that both work from a kind of abstract vision of totalitarian domination and end up with satanic overlords who aren't human. It is impossible to imagine the mechanisms by which such states could out-compete the human urge for freedom or evade their own fallibility . These tendencies, as P. notes are self destructive. Pol Pot, Mao, Stalin, Hitler were one generation empires. They do outline techniques of control that stand up powerfully over time.
I would argue that unrestrained capitalism is equally self destructive but with a longer, more refined and more global arc. It is far more likely that our own pigginess will destroy us than some evil other, because it is the current religion of narrow self interest that enables big oil, big guns and big money to steal the past and the future and buy our children with toys and customized, personalized, digitized, privatized utopian lies.
without an awakening of the wild indian spirit, the MLK dream, we are cooked.

Winston, of course, And Julia, are dead and sterile. The can't produce a child. In prison, Winston meets a woman who may be his mother. He can't say if she is or not. Like slaves, cut off at the root from the mother, the mother culture, language. Control the mode of re- production. cut the artist from the art and the audience. The consumer not the artist is the maker. but the postmodern generation has no aesthetic and anything is possible, postmodern humanism.

I agree with the premise that artists are Fuct in general in this society. But the leap from reproduction and info control to biological reproduction eludes me. Sock me some funky sox, to me!
