Doesn't this - in the original pagination it's p. 576 - refer to the 
usage of knights as recognition signals in the world of secret services? 
Non-linear flexibility, surprising moves ...

Apart from its immediate function in the text, this could also be a nod 
towards Nabokov, who often  - take /The Defense/, or /The Real Life of 
Sebastian Knight/ (sic!) - wrote about chess and also liked to play the 
game with Vera.
