Nabokov even composed chess puzzles....fittingly

Doesn't this - in the original pagination it's p. 576 - refer to
the usage of knights as recognition signals in the world of secret
services? Non-linear flexibility, surprising moves ...

Apart from its immediate function in the text, this could also be
a nod towards Nabokov, who often  - take The Defense, or The Real Life of Sebastian Knight (sic!) - wrote about chess and also liked to play the game with Vera.

In our house we have this picture under glass.

2013/2/23 Bled Welder:
Rainbow, Slothrop plays Pokler chess for a short paragraph, before Pokler
points a Luger "as big as a house" ("And it's about to set sail....") at the
pig's head. Slothrop plays chess by superstition, which is funny but
senseless enough. Obsessed with protecting his knights. What's the two
Springers there. Do they just spring, the knights, and Snuggles made a
Company out of their action? Is that it?
