GR and Mason & Dixon would cement any reputation, even if the rest of the books were dross. We'll see if IV gains in reputation as Vineland has seemed to do. I guess one should wait for the book, but the description of Bleeding Edge offered today seems to place it in the realm of what Pynchon called pot boilers in relation to CL49 in the mid-sixties. Has he endeared himself to such books--as he wouldn't (barring disastrous investments) seem to need the money these days as he seems to have done in the mid-sixties. Am curious to see what the book is; I'll wait till page 10 or 20 to decide about how excited I should be, though I may become retroactively excited years on, as I have been doing with IV the last couple of days. Of course, that IV excitement might subside if the idea about it doesn't pan out.

Thanks for the Atlantic link.  Interesting info, but I particularly like how the author is acting as though the verdict is still out on Pynchon's importance to American letters.  Maybe, after a couple hit and miss novels, Bleeding Edge will be the one that cements his fame!


I am incredibly excited to see 21st century Pynchon.
