In the lead-off essay, "The Name and Nature of Modernism" in the aforementioned
Modernism: ..1890--1930, the authors write that, with Ibsen and Strindberg redefining
modern theater and with many leading German (and Brandes, Danish) critics taking
over the concept of "the modern" in the arts starting in the 1880's as they wrote about
ibsen and Strindberg (and some others), they say that Modernism might be said to be bifurcated.....
since the wider definitional Anglo-American writers date to @1900 (or slightly later).
