NP but Nelson Algren

I've come to be attracted to writers with a certain style, flair what
have you, something that stands out no matter the story, where or how
depressing the subject (well, forget about models and celebrities now
that I think of it)

I tried reading man with the golden arm and didn't stick with it for
some reason.
