It's him *and* me, surely. At 23 I could keep pace with the demonic,
pyrotechnic energy of GR, which now sometimes strikes me as ADHD-ish. And as
I aged and fathered children, I became better equipped to appreciate the
families-and-generations wealth in Vineland, M&D, and AtD. Pynchon was
always obsessed with history, but he *inhabits* it more thoroughly, less
Baedekerishly, now than he did then. As do we, my fellow geezer-in-training.

Pynchon has changed surely but so have I. what thrilled me 20 yrs ago about
his writing doesnt thrill me as much.
