Also and i think pertinently, when i used to sport one, it became part of
my gestural repertoire to mess with it in various ways, such as  putting
thumb & forefinger up to the corners of my mouth and drawing them about
halfway toward each other, pushing the bristles relatively lightly against
the grain which would fluff it a bit and also induce a smile...something
i've seen others do, and what i picture Ensign Morituri doing here.

...the opposite of smoothing which would bring the fingers from near the
middle of the upper lip where i have a nifty little trough, down and
outwards towards the corners which would start to induce a frown but i'd
always correct it to a smile - my moustache was a jolly one, though not,
certainly, ever, the most luxuriant one in town (not, though, sparse, mind
you!)
