One is probably expected to be familiar with Ender's Game and its sequel,
maybe not as the primary associative nexus but somewhere in the background,
Maxine seemingly evaluating and putting her imprimatur on the fantasy
violence against queue jumpers (also reminded of the first episode of 30
rock where Liz Lemon buys all those hot dogs - a much more salutary
affirmation of norms, but Liz's world was conceived post 911 and from
behind the ramparts of the magnificent ruins of whatsisname's Studio
60...maybe Maxine is between 30 Rock's Liz and Gibson's Pattern
Recognition's Cayce - hey, never noticed the conjuration of Sleeping
Prophet Edgar Cayce in her name - in some kind of continuum of dystopianism)
