I had been excitedly anticipating it since I heard the announcement of
its production in Tony Ortega's blog on Scientology. I'm gonna bet
that the inspiration for the Nefastis machine is the E-Meter. In any
case, Philip Seymore Hoffman's evocation of L. Ron Hubbard is scarily
on. People long involved with Scientology who knew L.Ron spoke of the
uncanny authenticity of Hoffman's performance. From what I've read,
the deeper one is in the cult of Scientology, the more one recognizes
the authenticity of the 'tone' and practice of Scientology in "The
Master.".
By the way, keeping things 'on topic' here, Hubbard's primary
spiritual influence was the O.T.O., working strange autoerotic spells
with Jack Parsons and Robert Heinlein. Aleister Crowley thought the
lot of them asses, Jack Parsons—a rocket scientist?— eventually blew
himself up with rocket fuel.
Which brings us to Nicky Nookshaft.
