I use Scrivener for long-form writing and really recommend it. You can
skip between parts, chapters, sections etc with one click, and other
neat things. It's like an operating system (eg Windows, iOS) designed
specifically for writing.
If her journalism includes extensive interviewing or transcribing of
audio I can REALLY recommend the online program Transcribe:

Changed my life. Free to trial but as soon as my trial period was up I
bought it without a second's hesitation. Again, though, only useful if
you transcribe audio.
