Agreed - that’s why I have two copies of Pale Fire,  two copies of Underworld,  two copies of something by Pynchon but I don’t remember which.   I’ll be getting another copy of Mason & Dixon.  

Sometimes,  however,  the marginalia includes informative info - not just emotional or inter/intra-textual connections (it’s most often that though).   I needed the notes to figure out where the ball really went (its whole genealogy) on my third reading of Underworld - heh -
