I picked up this history book at a book sale and opened
it to read what I did not really know or have forgotten about
jay gould, the bust of whom is above Pierce Inverarity's bed
in The Crying of Lot 49.....

He and Jim FIsk bought up all the gold they could and then Gould
argued to the president and staff that for the US to release more into the money
supply would depress agricultural prices. So, worth rose and they
made a killing...

Seems to be the start of P's gold trope in his fiction, right? Sometimes gold
is just gold and by BLEEDING EDGE monopoly money is late capitalism.
