The writer explicitly stated in an interview that we (the audience) are the
transcendent beings Cohle refers to, in the fourth dimension, able to watch
any and all aspects of the "real world" (the events and characters within
the show). Even a DVD is a "flat circle". Most things Cohle says can be
viewed as both a meditation on life, and a meditation on film / television
making.
