You're in for a ride, Doc, however you go about it. I read the first 3
willy-nilly the first time through, then Vineland, M&D, ATD, as they came
out. Then I reread all sequentially while at the same time reading all CG
Jung's works on alchemy and a couple of Chinese alchemy classics, and some
Buddhist teachings. That was a fine year. A really great way to read
Pynchon if you have that kind of leisure. (I was a caretaker at a remote
Buddhist hermitage then, so I had lots of quiet time.) To sum up: I agree
with Mark and Laura and recommend as well any gnostic / alchemical stuff
you can find. I expect a good history of Western Civilization might be
nearly as rewarding, or any number of other co-dependent relationships
you're willing to forge with Pynchon and his opus.
