He didn't steal it, he developed it, took it to a new level.
Birth of a nation is a great but a racist film, too; the Ku Klux Klan was
glorified; the use of the Ride of the Valkyries was affirmative, in both
directions, I presume.
In Apocalypse Now it isn't used like that at all, it comes out of the
loudspeakers of the helicopters, it's deemed as the right music for this
occasion by a character of the movie, Robert Duvall's Lieutenant Colonel
Bill Kilgore, the man who loves the smell of Napalm in the morning. So,
yes, a much better use of Wagner than in Birth of the Nation, if you ask
me. (Coppola, of course, knew about Griffith's use of the Ride.)
