Makes me wonder whether this was done in the case of "There Will Be 
Blood" regarding Upton Sinclair's novel "Oil!". Perhaps there's a 
Sinclair-list out there where they had a similar discussion. But is it 
adequate? I don't think so. Movies are movies, and books are books. And 
then, more often than not good books - just think of Proust's opus 
magnum - do not make good movies. I enjoyed "There Will Be Blood" - much 
more than "The Master" - without knowing Sinclair's novel. The movie in 
itself made sense to me. I agree, however, that it wouldn't hurt if 
movie critics read the books the movies they review are based upon.  
It's relevant in terms of context. But not in terms of movie text itself 
which always can be understood by its own.
