Reading my last comment on this, it now seems like I was coming off a little strong for the context. I'd been out on the town and was... Feeling things deeply.
Still sums it up for me though. I think maybe they proffered the denial because it doesn't represent him in the best light. Seems like a quick, emotional, reactionary response to the circumstances at the time, which for me fits nicely with how I see him. He's more eloquent when he has time and controls the situation. Doesn't like being surprised. Running away from hotels... "Get that fucking hand away from me..", etc. I just think this might have been a rare time where he / they felt they should try and walk it back.
And I don't know about Melanie Jackson, but I don't think I can agree with the man himself disbelieving in bullshitting. Doesn't sum him up, but definitely there is a seed of it lingering *most of the time*. Though his heart and compassion for folks is what carries the day.
Again, who knows if it is legit. Feels like it to me though. And it seems to have been somewhat tacitly accepted as authentic by a number of Pynheads of long standing. Think I've seen it listed on a number of respectable bibliographies.
In the end, it doesn't change one dot, the works / words we *know* are his, and those are all that matters.
