A Chinaman, a Jesuit and a Corsican.......

I have just read about a Leading Nobody of the mid-1800's
who wrote the opposition essay to Emerson's profile
of Emanuel Swedenborg in his Representative Men....
(Emerson was taken, as was the James family patriarch,
by Swedenbog, mentioned even in Emerson's lecture
on Shakespeare).

He called Emerson's defense "Jesuitical". Evidently that
meaning goes pretty deep in American history...
