Cherrycoke having a hard time departing "...finds he can't
detatch...", while/because somehow symmetrically attached to Mason,
not newly departed from life, but "newly arriv'd at Death".

Another reason this story must have for starting in 1786 is that that
is the year real Mason died.
Cherrycoke came to town pay his Respects to Mason, but he missed the
funeral, right? He visits the grave everyday.

And even he, the heretic parson feels Mason's Presence after
Death---see the lines David quotes, so
..unusual in its phrasing, right?...Death as a place, not as a
departure from life....
see the L & D way of triangulating we've just learned about....

Here's a point Becker makes in his Heavenly Cities....all of those
Christian beliefs which bound Adams' Mont-Saint Michel and Chartres
world (and Dante's and Acquinas's were FELT by sensitive Christians as
natural for centuries, even as The Enlightenment ideas spread.....
