It All Connects (again)

I have too many books going already, but just picked up my Christmas-gift
copy of Greg Grandin's The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom and
Deception in the New World. I didn't know the source of the title, so the
first page told me:

Seeking to conquer a larger liberty, man but extends the empire of
necessity.

- Author unknown. Used as epigraph to Herman Melville's "The Bell Tower."

Boyoboy, is *that* going to echo for me this time through M&D...!
