"Your Grandsire Cherrycoke, Lads, has ever kept his
promise to remit to me, by way of certain Charter'd Companies,
a sum precise to the farthing and punctual as the Moon,-
to any address in the World..." p.9, Holt.
"Charter'd Companies" hmmm...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartered_Company
I don't think it was ever clearly specified if the
Philadelphia branch of the family acted as loyalists
or partisans during the recently ended rebellion. Given
Wicks's trade, perhaps both/neither. Even as today,
to the 1% (0.1?), it doesn't matter much which party
is in power- money has its own loyalties.
But also, for those who are more of the Mystickal intent-
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandsire
It could be an early example of Pynchonian Gematria,
which the author has liberally sprinkled through-out
the text, like sugar to the Sacchromaniac, that operates
simultaneously yet independently of the primary story.
Note the interplay between 5&6 bells in the above entry
on "Grandsire." The original hard cover M&D begins on
unnumbered page 5. The first numbered page is "6".
Then recall Cherrycoke's dilemma with the Law and a 5th
versus a 6th rate frigate:
"Are you saying that a sixth-rate is beneath you?" p.10
(As above so below)
Meaningful? Gibberish? Another rabbit hole? A whole warren?
"...along with so many hinges, sliding Mortises, hidden
catches and secret compartments that neither the Twins
nor their Sister can say they have been to the end of it" p1-2
Later, there will be certain five pointed stars, the first in the
mathematical progression of odd numbered stars, which,
unlike even numbered, or in this example, hexagonal stars,
break symmetry on inversion. Hilary Bounce and his benzene
ring, indeed.
But, but also...
Continuing along the links in the entry on "Grandsire"
one notes "Change Ringing"-
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_ringing
"The underlying mathematical basis is intimately linked to group theory."
Didn't someone mention earlier a connection to the Platonic: changes
in musical styles and social upheaval? Eh, and wasn't Group Theory
Weed Atman's chosen field?
Pass the donuts...
