NP but "they" in another book

  So in Chicago I bought this book that said: buy me. "Born to Kvetch:
Yiddish Language and Culture in All of Its Moods" is not a linguistic or
anthropological work but it's well worth what I paid. Imagine my surprise
when I found this about "chilly" European-born Yiddish speakers:
      "In their view...: if "they" know that you love [a thing], "they'll"
try to take it.... So, if you've got to like something, like it quitely, so
no one can see; but you're better off to develop a code, a way of letting
those in the know know what you feel without alerting "them" to the fact
that you're attached."

  The author implies an innate paranoia of sorts, no?  Make you think of
anything or anyone's writing?
