pp. 15-16. "There's this Jesuit, this Corsican, this Chinaman"....
anyone care to write the joke?
Since we never learn Pynchon's joke but what we
do learn is this "proper Englishwoman...gives
them 'scandalized Glances' about which the hot-headed Corsican
responds with that eternally hostile response.
"What ye looking at"?........and we never get her response
since Mason is appalled at the (probable) dirtiness of the joke...
'Sailors are staring"......
Riff.
What I am going to note is that this is the first of many
Glances in this story as told........what might Glances mean
associatively in the English--American 'society' of this telling?
