An important word in Ulysses, I submit, given the overall concept of the 
novel, a metempsychosis through literature sort of thing.

Also another case of "deflation" (if one wishes) -- "met him pike hoses" 
is how Molly understands the term.

Cf. Stephen's "I fear those big words that make us so unhappy."
