Misc. on a dog's life

Encountered Beckett's ENDGAME last eve and there is a dog in it.
It is three-legged and cannot stand up on stage when put down. At one
point, one hits another
over the head with it. it is
'thrown away' by the end of the play.

One of main characters first questions about it, re the dog--human
continuum is :

Does it suffer as much as I do? No doubt.


I'm sure some scholars have written of dogs vs humans throughout literature.
