Thanks, James! I'd completely forgotten that passage in GR. Hard not to wonder if Pynchon himself ever endured the ceremony. I guess there's not much on record about his naval career, other than what he writes about in the intro to Slow Learner.

Joining in late on the group read so my apologies if this has already been covered. Just wanted to point out the similarities between the equator crossing ceremonies described in M&D chapter 6 and the same which are mentioned briefly in GR in relation to Chiclitz, he of Major Marvy’s party.
