Maybe the possibility that the English frigate was not worth the damage it was doing. Smith sounds like a man of honour who would rather not fight , but wasn't about to surrender before he was utterly beaten.
Since there were agreements to allow passage to scientists, might the Seahorse have indicated that it was on a science mission with signal flags or something like that in the actual historic encounter? Has anyone read Mason's historic letter? Cuz ya got me.
