The flag became a racist symbol when, after over 100 year of obscurity, it
was resurrected, when LBJ got the Voting Rights Act passed in 1960. It's
new public life back then said to the racist majority that it's still Our
Country. Don't worry. See? We can still flaunt our racism in public with
this, our flag of Rebellion. Them Yankees really didn't win the war down
here.
The heritage and regional arguments are a very intentional cover.
