Gurdjieff said 70 or 80 years ago that human progress is a fiction, and we are actually devolving. I don't want to believe it, but the evidence seems to say he was right. 
In Taoist thought, when something reaches it's extreme, it swings back in the opposite direction. How much more extreme can the shit git? 
Even all of that is surface, since deep down, nothing changes, and the one, not being conscious of other, remains always as it is...
