Since Slothrop is gonna get split up, maybe we need to, as we're doing
with the map and the girls and the stars, start to consider that he
was never as put together as readers expect and assume. Or he was but
he also isn't. Maybe he's not,  strictly speaking, an American. There
is disguise and stencil and Henry Adams the spy and war correspondent
in Slothrop.
