Fowler sez that J's dart hitting dead center is like a " brilliant" opening sequence in Stoppard's Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are dead (1967) when the protagonists coin-matching has had 99 heads in a row---showing that forces beyond the ordinary have begun to operate. 

I post this because we know later at least Pynchon is some kind of fan of Stoppard's work.
Stoppard's " statement" is over-the-top demonstrative if it was an influence. P's is quite different and more ambiguous ( and subtle) and I don't see a connection except in the projected idea.
