I read the recent translations from the Penguin Classics Deluxe collection
(I think it adds up to four or five different translators in all) rather
than the Moncrieff, both because I've heard the Moncrieff is overly archaic
and because the Penguin copies were the nicest in the library. I speak no
French and thus I just sort of throw myself to the mercy of the translators
- even with just rudimentary Spanish I find myself sometimes puzzled by the
translation decisions made in texts that I'm able to read in both the
original and the translated version, so I've really just given up hope of
being able to make much of an informed decision about translations from
languages I can't read myself.
