GR translation: And how they know it

I think. in his inimitable resonant way, Pynchon does get a double meaning
out of that 'how'...notice the follow-up 'how' implying getting the
knowledge often and under all conditions...
if i'm right, I do not know how translation would capture it---so, more
kudos to you.
