It is safe to assume, I think, that given TRTP's relationship with the head
of Holt at the time,
Michael Naumann, Holt ran this ad past Melanie and Tom. Therefore the quote
was either
chosen by them among many possibilities---including Kakutani's NYT rave and
plenty others--or selected by them.

Either way, I think TRP especially loved the irony contained in Fowles'
"envying the culture"
remark. Envying this culture, the USA, the America, past and present,  of
MASON & DIXON.

Bury some wit, like the great Shakespeare, and see if it can be found. Love
it.
